Motion detectors are designed in order to detect moving sources of heat within their detection area and also to automatically switch the light in accordance to the ambient luminosity.
This is achieved thanks to passive infrared technology, whereby built-in infrared sensors are able to register thermal radiation and as a result convert this into an electrical signal. The sensor itself does not emit any radiation and as a result is referred to as a passive infrared sensor (PIR sensor).
