Safety light curtains are used to protect personnel should they try to enter a dangerous zone. They are effectively a multiple thru-beam photo-electric system with a large number of individual beams. A light curtain is formed by these multiple beams to create a barrier to the protected area. Should a person or object enter the curtain so breaking any of the light beams, the system will react by opening the contacts of its safety relay.
This type of system features electronic self-checking so that should an internal fault be detected the safety relay will open. Infra-red light beams are used which are visible to personnel but are powerful enough to ensure reliable system operation. The operating range varies depending on the model, and these systems have the advantages of ensuring personnel safety whilst allowing free access to the machine when necessary.
