What is a provisional patent application and when is it used

A provisional application is an initial, simpler filing intended to secure an early filing date without full formal requirements. It does not itself grant enforceable rights. You must later file a complete (non-provisional) application within a set time (e.g. 12 months) to benefit from that priority date.
